Walking for Wellbeing – Hebburn to South Shields
Free
Suitable for all ages
This walk will start from Hebburn Library and end at The Word, South Shields OR join the walk from Jarrow Focus – departing at 11.45am.
On this lovely ramble to South Shields, we will cross the River Tyne twice: first through the pedestrian tunnel and then on the Shields Ferry.
From Hebburn Library, our walk will follow some quiet paths through Carr-Ellison and Campbell Parks. We will then follow the River Don, passing Jarrow Bridge and St Paul’s Monastery along the way. After a short stop at Jarrow Focus, our route will take us across to North Tyneside via the Pedestrian Tunnel. The tunnel opened in 1951 and walking through it is like stepping back in time! Don’t forget to look out for the old county boundaries at the mid-point. On leaving the tunnel, our path will take us through East Howdon, Redburn Dene and Royal Quays. On a clear day, the views across the river are superb. We will finish by taking the ferry across to South Shields. The walk will end at The Word where refreshments will be provided.
You must bring a travel card or appropriate fare for the ferry and return journey home. Please also bring plenty of water and some snacks as this is a long walk.
