Summer Reading Challenge 2024
Free
Suitable for ages 4-11
Returning to South Tyneside Libraries is the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge, Marvellous Makers, and it’s all about creativity! From dance to drawing, junk modelling to music, there’s something for everyone.
Produced by the Reading Agency and delivered in partnership with libraries the Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4-11 to keep reading during the summer holidays, ensuring they are ready for a great start to the new term in the autumn. The challenge is for children to read six library books and they can collect rewards along the way. From Saturday 6 July – Saturday 14 September, children can sign up at their local library and it’s FREE to take part.
Children can take part in the Summer Reading Challenge online Summer Reading Challenge. Each time they finish a book, it gets added to their profile where they may leave a review. From here they can unlock rewards including a new online badge and certificate when the goal is met!
The Summer Reading Challenge will be delivered in libraries across South Tyneside including the Council’s multi-service hubs (The Word, Hebburn Central, Jarrow Focus and Cleadon Park) and the community libraries run by volunteer-based organisations.

About the Summer Reading Challenge
The Summer Reading Challenge, presented by The Reading Agency, is delivered in partnership with public libraries and funded by Arts Council England. The Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure over the summer holidays, providing lots of fun as well as helping to prevent the summer reading ‘dip’.
This year’s theme has been developed in partnership with a leading arts charity, Create.
