Sensory Journey’s… Journey to the Cornfields
Free
Suitable for all ages
Sensory Journeys: Journey to the Cornfield, in our ground floor pod, is a unique inclusive sensory experience combining storytelling, sound effects, and play.
The installation encourages you to use all your senses – sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. It is especially suited for those with special or profound multiple learning difficulties.
In June 2023, The National Gallery partnered with South Shields Museum and Art Gallery to bring John Constable, The Cornfield (1826) to South Tyneside’s Viking shopping centre in Jarrow.
Sensory Journeys: Journey to the Cornfield provides a sensory exploration of the painting. The accompanying poem Journey to the Cornfield and associated sensory resources were created by Sensory Practitioner Julia Collar.
See the exhibition from 15 August 2024 until 5 January 2025.
Delivered in partnership with South Shields Museum and Art Gallery and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, and The National Gallery.
Sensory Journeys: Journey to the Cornfield is part of South Shields Museum & Art Gallery’s digital sensory stories programme, ‘Sensory Journeys: Bringing stories to life with your help’. Explore the Sensory Journeys website and discover fascinating objects and art from the museum’s collections that support the stories. There are lots of fun sensory and creative activities to take part in too.
