Making Waves: An Exhibition Exploring Arts and Culture in South Tyneside
Free
Suitable for all ages
This exhibition brings together different arts projects which have taken place in South Tyneside in 2024, supported by Arts Council England.
Together these projects explore what arts and culture is and where you can experience culture in South Tyneside.
Through this installation you are invited to reflect on your own cultural experiences in South Tyneside whether it is performing arts, visual arts, music, literary or film.
Come along and explore the projects:
What is Culture? A Project with South Tyneside Youth Council – A visual map of the Borough showcasing what culture means to secondary school students in South Tyneside. Created with illustrator Josie Brookes.
Art Zoo with South Tyneside Libraries – A zoo-themed artwork display created by children aged 8+ at our library after school art clubs, guided by our library assistants and local artist Elizabeth Kane.
You can also get crafty and have a go at creating your own design to take away.
Only the Beginning… with The Customs House – This installation explores the stage production ‘Only the Beginning…’ which was set in the community of South Tyneside and celebrated the passion and triumphs of women’s football. See props from the production, a behind the scenes video and take part in a football-themed quiz.
Gig Culture with The Cultural Spring – A celebration of live music in South Tyneside from the 1950s to 2000s. This project showcases the local community’s memories and experiences of gigs, music venues, pubs and clubs in South Tyneside. Share your own stories of gig culture in the borough by adding it to our ‘Memory Lane’.
