POSTPONED OPENING: Investigating Detectives

From Sherlock Holmes to Inspector Gadget, Poirot to Wallander, investigate some of the world’s most famous fictional detectives and their creators in our new exhibition!

Find out about the best known on-screen detectives, study crime-busting techniques and examine the enduring appeal of detective stories, from classic novels to present day television series and everything in between.

Explore Sherlock Holmes’ Baker Street office and learn all about the character himself, then step into our Orient Express themed film space and watch Ann Cleeves, a local crime writer, talk about her famous North East detective Vera Stanhope and how the genre has developed over the years.

Examine an original Poirot manuscript, and marvel at Agatha Christie’s typewriter. There’ll also be authentic costumes used in Poirot and Sherlock Holmes TV adaptations, as well as a Vera Stanhope costume worn by Brenda Blethyn.

There’s plenty of activities to entertain the whole family; test your eyewitness skills, learn about forensic techniques, examine your own fingerprint under our microscope and pretend to be a suspect in a police line-up plus lots more!

The exhibition opens on Saturday 28 March and runs until Sunday 3 January 2021.
