Time flies – Relive the Legacy of Newcastle Airport!

We’re celebrating 90 years of Newcastle Airport with an installation in our ground floor pod – created by North East Museums.

See a snapshot of Newcastle Airport’s remarkable history over the last 90 years. Opening with just a handful of buildings, one hangar and a strip of grass in 1935, to becoming an award-winning major regional Airport connecting the North East to the world.

Today, Newcastle International Airport is the 11th busiest in the UK, with more than 3,200 people working on site and direct connections from the North East to over 80 destinations worldwide.

Delve into key moments of the Airport’s past, including:

  • Its vital role during World War Two training pilots in the RAF Volunteer Reserve
  • Thousands of people giving US President Jimmy Carter a real Geordie welcome during his visit to the region in 1977
  • Plus its significant investments to transform the runway, terminal and air traffic control tower over the years

Touch down in the past with items from the archives including uniforms and pilot licenses too.

Time really does fly, so come along and see for yourself!

See the installation from Thursday 25 September until Sunday 2 November.

Free to explore.

The installation is part of a touring exhibition. You can find out more stories and milestones from the airport’s 90-year history at: ncl90
