BEFORE YOUR VISIT

We want you to feel comfortable at The Word and give you the best possible visitor experience. Our staff are happy to talk through what to expect before you arrive and on the day.

If you or any of your group needs support to enjoy your visit, please call prior to your visit with any queries on 0191 427 1818. If needed, we can then arrange for a member of staff to be available to make sure you get the most out of your visit to The Word.

ACCESSIBLE CAR PARKING

There are 7 designated parking bays for visitors with a disability located at Harton Quays Car Park, next to South Shields Ferry Landing (opposite The Word).

ENTRANCE TO THE WORD

The Word is free for all visitors. Charges for events, performances, workshops, talks and creative sessions may apply.

Entrance to The Word is at street level via Market Place. From here, there is lift and stair access to all levels.

LIFTS

There are 2 lifts operating across all floors.

INDUCTION LOOPS

The following areas in The Word are fitted with hearing loops:

  • Café @ The Word counter
  • All staff pods
  • The Round

ASSISTANCE DOGS

We welcome assistance dogs (guide, hearing and seizure assistance) at The Word. A drinking bowl is available – just ask a member of staff.

BABY CHANGE

Baby changing facilities can be found on the Ground Floor, Levels 1, 2 and 3.

Please note: we do not allow buggies in event spaces and should be stored in the buggy store located on Level 2, subject to space availability.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS

All floors are accessible for wheelchair users via the lift.

SEATING

Occasional seating can be found on the Ground Floor, Levels 1 and 2.

TOILETS

Unisex accessible toilets are located on the Ground Floor, Levels 1, 2 and 3.

CHANGING PLACES FACILITY

There is an accessible changing places facility located on the Ground Floor.

CAFÉ @ THE WORD

Café @ The Word is located on the Ground Floor, serving a range of food and drinks. If you or any one in your group have any dietary requirements please speak to a member of the catering team.

The cafe is self-service from a counter; however, staff can assist with table or tray service on request.

All staff can assist by running through menus with you.

ATTRACTION (DISPLAYS, EXHIBITIONS ETC)

The Word Library staff are located around the building to assist visitors with interpretation and information on exhibitions, information and activities.

There are interactive touch screen activities throughout The Word; all can be accessed from a sitting or standing position.

Two telescopes are located on The Lens platform Level 2 (one at an accessible height for visitors in wheelchairs) and a further two can be found on the Rooftop Terrace.

LARGE PRINT

The Self Tour Guide is available in large print from the Shop @ The Word. Other promotional materials produced by The Word can be made available in large print or alternative formats by contacting South Tyneside Council on 0191 427 7000.

APPROACHABLE STAFF

Trained members of staff are happy to answer any questions and provide help and guidance for getting around the building.
