South Tyneside Doorstep Stories Project

The Word worked with Unfolding Theatre to deliver the South Tyneside Doorstep Stories Project as part of the Season of Northern Conversations programme which ran from March to July 2022. The team worked with school children and their families to create three original stories inspired by the children’s creativity and imagination.

The families and children who participated were from St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Jarrow, Westoe Crown Primary School in South Shields and Epinay School in Jarrow. During the first week of March, Unfolding Theatre worked with three schools and visited children and over 35 families on their doorstep to begin creating the stories together.

The stories produced were Sweet Caroline by Westoe Crown Primary School and Alex Elliott, Isabella the Pirate by St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and Wambui Hardcastle and You Can Just Be You by Epinay School and Becci Sharrock.

Almost 500 creative engagements took place over the course of the project and over 175 children were involved in the co-creation of the three stories.

The stories were shared at a three sold-out storytelling sessions at The Word on Monday 11 April. Children and their families listened to the stories that were created and got involved in creating their own with the storytellers.
