Laura Fitton’s Reportage Art Commission

When we first started our reportage drawing project with Laura we couldn’t have imagined what was about to come for us all.

Looking for a positive in this situation, it meant that we were in a position where Laura had documented activity at The Word and in South Tyneside prior to the National Lockdown in March 2020 and has been able to continue to record life as we move on. We were also able to document some of the partial reopening of libraries during late summer 2020, it was strange to be carrying Laura around on a computer whilst she was on Zoom and it felt almost rude to leave her on a table at the entrance of The Word but it meant that she could record this strange time for her reportage project.

More recently Laura has been attending some of our online events and she captured the Ukulele session perfectly.

Working with Laura has been an absolute pleasure for us, her style of drawing is quirky and fun, we are really looking forward to being able to display some of the drawings at The Word, I am a little bit sad that we never quite made it to a Hebburn Town match but I’m sure Laura will be watching the FA Vase Final on 3 May and wearing her black and yellow with pride!
