Laser Cutters

Laser cutting is a process in which a high-powered laser is used to cut or engrave objects from wood, plastic, metal and other materials. Laser cutting machines offer a lot of flexibility to create your own personalised items to suit your use.

Here at FabLab @The Word, there is access to two laser cutters: the Epilog ZING with a 40 watt laser and an Epilog Mini. Both machines are equal in quality but one is larger to print more larger-scale items.

Using the laser cutters

We run regular laser cutting sessions for both adults and children to have a go using this technology. Adults are able to get an in-depth tutorial – from developing designs to using the machine. Young people are able to book onto a session to gain a deeper insight into the technology and create a unique keepsake. Younger children and families can also have a go by attending one of our drop-in sessions and seeing one of their hand-drawn designs turned into a keyring, coaster or keepsake.

Personalised items

In FabLab @ The Word we make a wide range of personalised gifts and items using our laser cutter such as bookmarks, decorations, name tags, place settings and more.

Personalised gifts can be created from hand-drawings or we can simply add names, messages or even photographs to items.
