Soundpit

An interactive installation using sand, visuals, music and motion technology.

Soundpit was on display at The Word from November 2022 until April 2023.

This  interactive, installation invited audiences to create sounds and visuals by playing with sand. Soundpit opened up the art of music-making to all ages and abilities. It allowed visitors to explore their sense of vision, sound, touch and play and become the composer of their own masterpiece.

Artist Di Mainstone and her team created three different sandpits, each with their own name and a unique, visual and sonic personality and character. Soundpit was great for those interested in art and music, as well as sensory play and an interactive experience.

Soundpit at The Word was the first time the installation had visited the North East and celebrated the borough’s connection to the coast, as part of Year of the Coast 2023.

Soundpit was been created by Di Mainstone, Architects of Rosslyn, Wetgenes, Roula Caroll, Jouna Lansman and David Morris.
