No Place Like Home
17 January 2020 – 11 March 2020
No Place Like Home celebrated 100 years of council housing.
In 1919 the Addison Act was introduced to create a nationwide system of public housing provision for the first time which would give working families a higher standard of housing.
The content within the exhibition was shaped by the stories and memories that residents have shared with us of growing up in South Tyneside and in particular of the council estates that were built. From indoor bathrooms, built-in larders to gardens and communities with access to a range of facilities such as shops, churches and medical centres, the new houses provided a home.
