Inpress Presents… Tricks of the Trade: A Guide to the World of Publishing
The life of a book from conception to the shelf.
This session offers a practical overview of the publishing process from conception to print, giving budding authors, publishers and anyone interested in learning about the book trade an insight into how that one flash of inspiration makes its way onto bookshelves.
This session will cover the nuts and bolts of the often mysterious world of publishing, showing the work that goes in to making a book a success.
Sharing their knowledge of the process are Stephanie Hodgson from Seven Stories, Frankie Porter from Moth Publishing, Rebecca Robinson from Inpress and Mark Stanton of the recently launched literary agency, The North.

About the event speakers
Stan (Mark Stanton) worked at Canongate Books for more than six years before becoming an agent in 2003. He represents writers from an array of genres including: literary and book club fiction, crime and thrillers, as well as non-fiction – particularly in the areas of biography, sport an popular culture. In 2011, he was short-listed for Literary Agent of the Year.
Stephanie Hodgson is the Bookshop Coordinator and Buyer for Seven Stories, The National Centre For Children’s Books. She has a passion for Children’s literature, especially YA fiction, a genre she reads avidly and blogs about. She enjoys the variety her job brings, whether it’s looking at original manuscripts from authors such as Enid Blyton, or getting her hands on advance copies of books from new writers – which allows her to always be on the lookout for the next big thing.
Rebecca Robinson is the Sales and Marketing Executive at Inpress, dealing with all things book sales and more. She also represents Inpress on the steering committee of T-Junction, a four-day festival in Middlesbrough. She studed English and Comparative Literature at Goldsmiths but otherwise has lived in Newcastle all her life and joined Inpress from Blackwell’s in 2014.
Frankie Porter is the production manager at Mayfly Press, where she oversees the publication of books from setting and cover design to printing and ebook conversion. She has worked on novels, short stories, non-fiction and poetry collections, and is looking forward to producing Mayfly’s first graphic novel later this year. She enjoys typesetting, negative space, and the Oxford comma.
