Pro Poetry Demonstration Slam! Come see some of the top poets in the North show off their slam skills. Brilliant, angry, funny, ranting, passionate poems from Jenni Pascoe, Kirsten Luckins, David Jarman, AJ McKenna, Sky Hawkins and Steve Urwin.

Then come along and try out your performance skills in the open slam – open to anybody who brings along 3 poems to battle it out in a supportive audience atmosphere.

About Kate Fox

Kate Fox has made a living as a stand-up poet for 10 years performing her solo comedy shows from Edinburgh Festival to the Southbank Centre; she has also been broadcast on Radio 4. She is a regular speaker on panels and radio shows and a writer of poems, stories and journalism. Kate is two years into a full-time PhD at the University of Leeds, looking at class, gender, Northernness and solo stand-up performance and is folding her new research into her practice as a comedian and poet, and her poetry and comedy into her research.

About Jenni Pascoe

Jenni Pascoe is a multi-slam winning North East poet with a penchant for purple.

Past performances include the Big Chill Festival, Northern Stage, Newcastle Pride, BBC Slam, Lindisfarne Festival and many appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as well as headlining at various local events, University of London, and Jawdance.

About Kirsten Luckins

Kirsten is a North East poet who was once shortlisted for the Wenlock Prize. As well as being a performance poet, Kirsten also publishes her work.

She has also made two spoken-word-poetry-theatre-shows which are adapted for all environments.

About David Jarman

David Jarman is a spoken word artist, songwriter and playwright from York.

As well as being a solo performance poet, David also writes and performs with York based band Gobbledigook.

About AJ McKenna

AJ McKenna is multiple slam-winning performance poet, journalist, educator and LGBT rights activist. AJ uses her unique combination of humour, passion and vulnerability to tackle prejudice head-on, to make audiences think about aspects of sexuality, gender and everyday life they may previously have taken for granted.

About Sky Hawkins

Sky Hawkins, also known as The Word Bird, is considered one of the North East’s top performance poets.

She has headlined events across the North East, won numerous slams, and has led cross-platform collaborations with other artists.

About Steve Urwin

Steve Urwin is a diarist, editor, publisher and poet. He is a popular performer on the North East live circuit, appearing regularly at venues such as the Literary and Philosophical Society, Cumberland Arms and Jazz Café in Newcastle to Lamplight Arts Centre, the Gala Studio and Waddington Street Centre in County Durham.
